Elara Quill doesn't work a scene the way other detectives do. She doesn't chase motive first, or alibis, or the usual suspects. She starts with everyone — the entire crowd — and spends the rest of the case making it smaller.
It's slower than instinct. It's also never wrong. By the time Quill names a killer, she isn't guessing — she's the only person left who can name them, because she's the only one who actually crossed everyone else out first.

The method
Quill treats every case the way she treats a page of fifty thousand names: nothing on it is decoration. A name that seems irrelevant on page one is often the reason page two makes sense. She reads twice — once for what's there, once for what was arranged to be there.
She keeps her clues in the order she receives them, not the order that flatters a theory. She's said more than once that the moment a detective starts skipping evidence because it doesn't fit yet, they've stopped investigating and started guessing.
On the record
Quill doesn't narrate her own thinking for an audience, and she isn't especially interested in being liked by the people she interviews. She is, however, exact — with witnesses, with herself, and with the twenty statements that stand between her and a name in every case she opens.
Case 001 was her first appearance. It won't be her last.
